Meeting the Fans: A Guide to Not Wanting to Live Anymore

We here at 4chan are constantly amazed by how rapidly our userbase is growing everyday. You’re the guys that make the site what it is. We are also amazed at how stupid large groups of people can act, even when the individual may be rational or intelligent. Group thinking and expectations of norms take hold due to the power of peer pressure and situational thinking. With a large enough group of peers to exert some force on your social expectations, one can be forced to do anything, even something they find illogical.

Enter the anime convention…

From their humble beginnings as a group of mildly devoted nerds at UC Berkeley talking about Dr. Slump in someone’s basement, to the full on neon glowing eyesores of the modern convention, anime conventions could not be a greater example of a group of people throwing logic and established social norms out the window.

Self-established experts on everything from sake to gay culture in Japan espouse their faulty knowledge to masses willing to listen. Strangers may interrupt your conversations. If you’re really unlucky they might even want to invade your personal space by “glomping” you, or less colloquially, giving you a sexually-transmitted disease.

Legions of festooned teenagers position themselves in an arbitrary pecking order to see who really rules the roost when it comes to looking like a cartoon character. Do not mess with these people, for they take their hobby far too seriously for what basically amounts to Halloween without the candy or fun. The smell of broken eggs won’t leave you, however, as people actively refuse to bathe.

What once was the equivalent of arguing which Starship Captain is better (Kirk) has ballooned into a cottage industry for the socially inept. People who never socialized with other people to begin with do their best to imitate some social stud they’ve seen on TV (Zack Morris) only to fail miserably. After medicating their social anxieties and fears of death by buying figurines, DVDs, and comics, they head home. Back to their murky basements and locked rooms, where they can fantasize about a reality that has and never will exist, inside a cartoon.

Team 4chan will be at Otakon, ACen, and AnimeNext; please feel free to make us vomit on ourselves (buy us drinks).

    Hahaha, fucking brilliant.

But sadly, anime fans at cons often make /b/tards look sane, debatably sexually appealing. Since you reference mob mentality and peer pressure, perhaps you guys could coax some of the con-goers into paying upkeep costs on those servers ;D

Fuck – anyone else just think of Magic: the Gathering…?

Oh God, I wish I could go to an anime convention so I’d get the chance to look at and possibly even talk to females.

Yes, you could always assault them under the guise of “glomping.” Considering con security, if you choose the right costume (remembering to cover face and easily distinguishable tattoos, etc.) you can practically rape them and get away with it.

Anyhow, there are plenty of people to meet and violate at the cons, but be sure to keep these statistics in mind:

1/2 of these people are female (ie. they have a vagina)
1/2 of those people are distinguishably female
1/2 of those people are females you would want to sex
1/2 of those people are not lesbians
1/2 of those people are not infected with an STD
1/2 of those people are not furries
1/2 of those people are not “saving themselves” for marriage
1/2 of those people are remotely sane and tolerable to talk to
…and she probably won’t be drunk enough.

But you can make some compromises and come out alright. Good luck.

I may be a Eurofag, but I gotta laugh.

Anime conventions here (if they exist that is) would probably be similar, though anime fangeeks i know IRL (the non-internet folk) are without exception at least ‘intelligent’ people and not one socially retarded.

Perhaps it’s something to do with the popularity of anime in america, and its lackthereof here. As far as I can tell, anime is about as popular in america as it is in Japan. That troubles me deeply.

The layout is cool as # 1245, but is there any chance of the Fiction section returning? If not, is there another text board recommended for posting fiction, or a text board mod to talk to about it?

One thing you need to realize is that 4chan.org is filtered a LOT. world4ch.org wasn’t at all, and seeing how it’s text only, it was safely accessed at school, public computers, etc. By putting them under the same domain, it’s going to be a lot more frustrating to access and really.. in spite of it being easier for you guys to admin, it’s going to cause a lot of problems for the users – I’m not sure who you feel should be less burdened.

Oh, and you nerds need to realise that this isn’t the kind of place you magically lose your virginity at. Things like that don’t happen, especially on an anime-con where most of the girls are prone to be just as socially inept as the guys. For fucks sake, get friends and go to parties, talk to her, give her your number/mail(s) and invite her out on parties, etc. Then, one day, ask her if she wants to sleep at your place after the next party.

As a self-proclaimed not insane nerd and having been to a whopping TWO (!!) anime conventions here in Sweden I would like to counter-argue the point the previous Swedish poster brought forth – most people here appear to be more relaxed about it, even if the incredibly annoying super fangirl clichés and morons who take cosplay waaaay too seriously always exist.

Of course, some US anime conventions have upwards of 5000 visitors from what I’ve heard, and there’s also a much larger pool of population from which they’ll spawn, so I guess the rate of crazies must be higher…

I have only ever been to one anime-con before. Partly because there are not many on here and because im not massively into anime, theres several i like and watch but i have other interests also. Anyway, i went with my friend Amelia for the weekend and at the con she was a sailor moon charecter (so common) and i just wore plain clothes, im dull like that. Now i swear on my own life that no less than three guys came up to me seperatly and at different times and said “Is that your girlfriend?” or something to that effect. Never met any of them before in my life, they didnt smile then say hello, bla bla, just out of the blue said that.

Talk about socially retarded… /b/tards should not be let out into the real world. Make a note of it mods.

Also the only con I’ve ever been to is ComicCon and that was bad enough. I can’t imagine how awful a serious anime con must be.

I’m thinking about going to FurCon next year since I live pretty close (San Francisco) but I’m not sure if spending 3 days making fun of furfags would stay funny or just get incredibly depressing.

Thank you, shut, that was a very humorous article, even if you stereotyped everything about conventions to Hell. Of course, the 4chan community loves its stereotypes, so this wasn’t entirely unexpected, and it was good for a laugh. But for those who read this and say they would never go to a convention, I’d like to point out that the article should not be taken at face value.

I’ve been to a total of five conventions in the US thus far, and yeah… some people are pretty crazy, others rather annoying, and a few really need to bathe. Overall, though, there’s not much more insanity going on than any other large social gathering. Most attendees conduct themselves sensibly. I’d have to say maybe 10% of the people going to the con are certifiably insane, and it’s easy to lose them in the crowd.

You know, I’ve often thought about going to one of these conventions. But, after alot of thought I realised that I would be:

    A) a creepy 28 yr old hanging out with a bunch of teens

    B) Out of place as I don’t REALLY care enough to suspend my belief and roleplay ANYTHING.

    C) the fact that I do have more of a life than most ( Anime and /b/ are my demons )
and HAVE been laid and DON’T look like the comic book store guy in The Simpsons, I would have the shitty luck of meeting some 15 yr old girl who ends up sexing me and I go to jail for statutory rape.

    D) I don’t think I EVER want to meet another channer in person. It would destroy my mental picture. Hell, the 4chon panel vid was damaging enough.

Conventions are bizarre, but certainly not boring. Good for all the crazy people to get out and do something they enjoy for a change. I’m all for breaking societal norms (although some of them are there for reason). Try it, and, OMG, actually socialize with someone you have something in common with. If you don’t like anime, well, this is an anime convention. Don’t go, idiot.

Comparable to the genuine religious events of Carnival and Hajj
    Reeking internationalist frenzy
    Class, race and gender obliterated
    The Ordeal of Fun
Would you really prefer to be at a convention full of doctors or lawyers? Handing out your card and acting like you respect the others?

Thanks to Tokyopop and the Cartoon Network, anime fans are younger, cleaner, and more mainstream than before. This is good because you can see good looking females at anime cons nowadays. Unfortunately most of them are too damn young for hardcore. You have to explain it to them, and most don’t have the attention span for it.

The fat isn’t any more prevalent in anime fandom than it is in Americans in general. It’s just more horrible when the fans are compared to the slender, beautiful anime characters they like.

Just like any campout or field trip, if you want sex, bring your own. Unless you ordinarily pick up anything you want—oh, and enjoy your herpes.

If this is how it really happens when you meet a 4chan user, then I’d just walk away. Like the people in that 4chon video, I’m guessing there’s a big group that isn’t like that tho. More liek, I hope!

I frequesnt Anime cons, and the thing that bothers me most is the damned kiddy-fans. Here in Canada (where loli will get you b& from society) we have a T.V. channal called YTV (Youth television.) YTV has a habit of invadeing Anime Cons and bringing droves of 12 year old pokemon junkies and bey-blade fags to clock the convention halls and ask really dumb questions like “Why are they talking funny?” and “What’s Hentai?.”

What is worse is when the kids are left there by the parents, or escorted by their “older” sibling, the 16 year old noob who wants to buy hentai in the dealer’s room, but are worried about not looking old enough, so they just stand their gawking for 30 minuets. The damned ass usually looses his charge in the process and we end up with kids just wantering about unescorted.

Many of the Anime fans I know (myself included) fall under 2 catagories. Egatistical, self important intellectuials and over-enthusiastic idiots.
Those with an IQ above 101 tend to seem themselfs as mentally superior to all around them and feel that they are the only sentiant being in the universe. frequently these people find other stuck-up egomaniacs who share a similer ideology and they perform a kind of group-think that allows them to block out any other source of reason or logic. At times this can be so powerful that they actually are able to deny the existance of contradiction evidence to their areguemt though force of will alone.

The other type are more dangerous. While Ego-Brains tend to be reclusive and unsocial, jublint morons are all too friendly, how ever socially inept they may be. these are the people who often say the most idiotic things, or have the most unfounded of opinions, but can’t keep their mouths shut due to their explosive enthusiasum for what ever is going on around them. these are the “glompers” and brightly coloured cos-players who tend to open their mouths and insert their foot. They anoy other due to their inability to comprehend simple concepts such as “no,” “Go away” and “Stop touching me.”
You can often identify these people though such phrases as “I’m booored…” or “I want one, get it for me.”

I would most likly fall under the Ego catagory myself.

I once was part of the staff for a relatively tiny con in south Florida. I worked, slept on a table in the vendor’s room, worked again (with lower back pain), and had an overall good time watching amusing people doing amusing things. What I’m kind of miffed about is this gay guy who attended the con got a lot of hugs from some damn good looking women. Dammit to hell. :/ Apart from that, everything was pretty much low-key and relatively quiet. Brought a decent pile into the local economy, so yea. It’s all good. I may attend a bigger con later this year. Who knows?

You need to know, for your safety.

Glomping is essentially the most fucking scary thing you will experience, ever, in your entire life. It entails members of another party (usually only one person, though I’ve personally been glomped by four at a time) getting a running start and then jumping on you, clinging to your body like leeches and then squealing at a high enough pitch to burst your eardrums. For every 20 pounds overweight and each X chromosome a person has, they’re that much more likely to glomp you and consequently enact enough fear in you to knock five years off your lifespan. I’m sure there’s some kind of mathematical equation to it. The really fat ones even have the gall to pinch your ass do things equally and/or more suggestive and horrifying. That being said, if you see someone running towards you at a terrifying speed with their arms spread out, run in the opposite direction- RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE.

I’ve never been to a con so I havn’t been glomped. But from what i’ve read from the threads its seems like a swift boot to the head would cure the problem. If they get all upity and go to the securtiy I can just say I was self defence. Defending your self from a group of people runing toward you seems like a good enough reason to use resonable force.

As a faithful congoer to Anime Weekend Atlanta (moot’s parents let him go once, Snacks probably goes more often due to convenience of location), I feel I must dispel any questions concerning shut’s original post.

    This is all true.

If you have hardly been to anime conventions or have never been graced with the opportunity; this is, for the most part, completely true. For three days every year for the past four years, I have withdrawn from normal society and cocooned myself within the depths of a dank, gaudy, overly-colorful convention hotel and let my inner Japanese schoolgirl take a death grip upon my very soul. That would usually depress me to no end and would probably ensure that I was thoroughly beaten and scorned by normal society, but for these three days, am accepted with open arms.

Indeed, the Japanese animation convention is a sight to behold. Acne-pocked, sniveling, chubby American youth speaking disgustingly broken Japanese around every corner and shoveling Pocky down their throats at rates comparable to diabetic genocide. “Sugoiii, look at that Edward-kun! Kawaiiii!!” Short, spectacled men in their early 40’s hassle gay hentai dealers, demanding in shrill voices if they have “Neon Genesis ANALGELION,” issue 5. A man dressed in nothing but a sheet wrapped around his genitalia plays Dance Dance Revolution while his cheering section grows. Browse the viewing rooms, and you’ll find at least two packed with over 200 large, sweaty people. The max occupancy is clearly stated out front: 125 occupants. It’s the yaoi hour. Last year I took a candid picture of the four Link clones from Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, all sitting at a sports bar sipping cocktails. Yes, this is not only a call to arms for all “otaku,” no, this is war cry for the misrepresented freak shows of every subculture in a 50 mile radius. Two boys paraded the convention two years ago, both in cat ears and rhinestone-studded women’s makeup and clothing (for the most part); one’s shirt had the cast of Cowboy Bebop printed on the front, the other’s read “I (heart) DICK”. Brokeback Bebop was dragging “I (heart) DICK” around on a dog leash. Videogaming rooms have to be shut down at intermittent hours, even entire tournaments cancelled; the reason? Fumigation.

This is only the tip of the iceburg.

For those of you asking about “glomping,” everything you have heard is true. The description in itself does no justice to the sheer terror of experiencing one first-hand. A “glomp” is, quite simply, an easy medium through which anime-addicted, socially-deprived fangirls channel their pent-up sexual frustrations. If you are a male between the ages of 14-32, dressed in a kawaii (that is japanese for cute) cosplay, are a “sexy bishie” in general, or ask for one out loud (it’s much like Aquaman calling for seacreatures, only smellier), you will be charged by any of the aforementioned fangirls and “forcefully hugged.” If you have ever watched American football, this is comparable to a quarterback sack. If you aren’t physically and emotionally prepared, a well-placed glomp can end your convention prematurely.

The seriousness of a cosplayer’s career is also just as true as shut depicts it. Prime example: AWA, two years ago, there was a medical emergency in the main atrium. Someone passed out inside their costume from posing for pictures for too long. Last year, there was an award for “Best “In-Character” Cosplayer,” which was given to a stocky lad dressed as Enter the Grave from Gungrave. He hauled his elaborate coffin up the stairs, was asked to say a few words, and promptly pulled his gun (Left Head, not Right) on the presenter. Peelander Z, a Japanese “kaiju” rock group out of New York, had to ask the audience during the middle of their show why they were even there. (If Peelander Z has to ask civilians why they are playing somewhere, you know something is wrong.) I attempted to have a conversation with someone in a full cat costume, but only recieved “meooow?” as an answer.

I have heard rumors of larger cel-shaded art orgies in other equally dark and equally recessed corners of the nation; conventions that last longer and draw a higher occupancy. AWA usually draws around 3500. Otakon (one of moot’s favorite stalking grounds) has a hilariously depressing banner on their website at the moment: “There are just 100 days until Otakon 2006! 20508 memberships left!” There were 1000+ more memberships two weeks ago if my memory serves me well. It is a moot point (no pun intended), however, as EVERY ONE OF THESE MEMBERSHIPS WILL BE GONE, bought up by anime dilletantes and underaged Inuyasha fangirls frothing for the chance to possibly smuggle out a hard copy of “Inuyasha, the Doujin: Affections Touching Across Dick” to further enchant their Sengoku period-less reality.

As despicable as these occult rituals seem, I see it only fitting to say that I enjoy the hell out of them. I can act like a complete moron (I can act like I do on 4chan!!), and not only *not* be questioned, but be accepted by those around me, and possibly even joined in the collective mind-numbing retardation. PC gamers have lanparties, movie fanatics have movie nights, new-age poker fans have the majority of the Travel Channel’s programming schedule, so I suppose it’s only fitting that a subculture so rapidly rising to the top of the festering cesspool that is mass media have its own outlet to channel countless, hopeless otaku like us through.

This means that at a typical anime convention (~2000 visitors), there are 16 fuckable females, and 16 fuckable furry females (they’re actually smarter than anime fan females).

Generally 75% of the anime females are going to be 18. Half of every group could probably get tipsy enough to touch your penis. Half of those would even do some kinky shit.

In review, at an anime con, you will find bangable:
    3 underage fuckable anime females
2 underage fuckable kinky anime females
    1 adult fuckable anime female
2 adult fuckable kinky anime females
    3 adult fuckable furry females
2 adult fuckable kinky furry females
    2 underage fuckable furry females
1 underage fuckable kinky furry female

There are a total of 16 available girls, and 500 available guys. Good luck.

oh, they think about air circulation. managing the smell is actually a big concern at a lot of these things. it’s just that the stench is so fucking overpowering that there’s little you can do. a couple years ago otakon’s game room (probably the smelliest place at any anime con, because of the ddr) was the size of an airplane hangar, and between the ddr players and the tourney kids it stank of hell itself. you couldn’t walk for long in there before feeling choked. the next year they wisely put the exact same equipment in a room twice the size. it smelled, sure, but it wasn’t overpowering. the game room NEEDED thiis major area of the con center, just to counter the godawful smell.

I’ve been to Otakon 5 years in a row now, and I’ve gotta say its really not as AWFUL as everyone makes it out to be. Sure there is glomping and cosplay, and there is some general douchebaggery. I’ve never noticed a serious “smell” problem, ever, not once. In a large crowd of any size you’ll find people who are assholes, its unavoidable. Unless you spend all your time walking around the hallways at Otakon you’re not going to be subjected to very much douchebaggery, if you’re in video rooms, or panels everyone is just sitting and watching. Sure you can go and seek out the annoying parts of a convention, and then happily dwell in how terrible a time you’re having at an ‘evil anime con’. Or you can go, find something you like and have an enjoyable time with minimal annoyances with like minded people.

I’m supposed to go to Anime Expo, and already I’m packing a gas mask. I actually take pride in my hygiene and my social skills. Given that this is the largest Anime convention in North America, is it safe to say that I’ll expect more douchebaggery, pungent odors, and the possible ugly-glomp? I ain’t a terrible lookin’ dude myself, so given the fact that I’m not an eyesore, will I be a *shudder* glomp-able or whatever the fuck material?

If so, I will literally have to bring my pimp cane. See this crimson red shit I’m wearing?

  121. Executive of a moderately small, cheap, and generally unknown con said,

    June 4, 2006 @ 7:54PM · #1391

I have to say, this article sums up more or less how I feel about cons. While it is true that these people are not necessarily the majority, due to their…shall we say, exuberance? these people end up being the VERY VERY HIGHLY visible minority.

I help to organize our con because I find it enjoyable to see others enjoying themselves–not necessarily because of the people who go.

Strangely enough, I find the best people to meet at cons to be the staffers, and the volunteers. It’s these people who are the REAL fans. You may be asking why, right now–but it’s because these people are the real fans of anime–they actually want there to be a convention, they want there to be an opportunity to speak with other fans (note that I mean FANS–NOT FANBOY/FANGIRLS. The difference being that fans enjoy an anime, fanboys/girls wish and imagine they ARE that anime) about the nuances and references in certain anime, about the philosophical debates that are raised.

The highly-visible minority which we’re all talking about (those glomp-mongers) are the kind who when you try and speak to them about the underlying themes in an anime, they’ll say “What? Oh, I don’t know, I just watch it for [random name]-kun! *squee* he’s such a kawaii bishie!” (Note that you can usually spot the annoying minority by the fact that 1/5 words spoken will be in japanese–and usually 1/3 of those is “kawaii”). They’re the kind who dress up as characters regardless of how little they resemble said character. They’re the kind who will reject and stonewall someone because they don’t watch or don’t like an anime.

Many people simply go to cons to have fun, to watch anime they haven’t seen before, or to peruse the dealer’s room, or meet the guests who have travelled all the way there.

You want the REAL fans? Go find the volunteer’s room, or the staff room. Take a minute to walk inside one of the showing rooms and listen to the people who talk about the themes or underlying ideals behind an anime.

You want the fanboys/fangirls? Find the people who are loudly exclaiming/complaining that “They never show any good shows on!” or are criticizing everyone who walks by on their costume–but are often wearing badly designed/fitting costumes themeselves.

I love my con. I don’t necessarily love everyone who comes.

I have never been to any these conventions and probably because these people are scary enough just to see in text. My older sister probably is the overenthusiastic anime fan-girl. She’s gushes over a new anime on cartoon network and I have to suffer. I am definitely neither of those types because I have grown a brain and watch ONLY for entertainment. I am the type that likes anime but I refuse to have my life revolve around it. I use to be the enthuastic anime fan-girl and I wanted to be anime creator when I got older, but after being through middle school, I saw that I don’t want to actually BE that kind of anime fan. Now, I just watch it for fun and don’t think of anything deeper than what I’m asked about it. But when I become an adult and graduate from highschool, I plan to be doctor and live to be a filthy rich bitch. I think I’ll travel to Dallas just once to see one of those conventions and see if there are any hot anime nerd boys at one of those things and if there aren’t. I’m just giving up the whole shebang and become one those hated NORMAL people with family problems.

I think Otakon2005 can attest to this. My favorite part is where the people waiting in line for the 4chan panel forgot what “straight” “line” and “up against the wall” meant.

My con rocked. Hot Japanese chicks in tight blue and yellow costumes that covered less than half their ass and tits.

You’d have fun. Chill and relax there, no worry man.

And for the records, cons are similar, no matter the subject. Being an rpg fan, I can say that Gencon and all have the same ‘glamour’, so the otaku bashing is a bit ridiculously ironic.

    Okay, so I was #1390.

The con wasn’t that bad. Honestly I remember like one case of Japanophile-phunk, and it came from the dancing totoro thing. I remember after using my airhorn on it, it started to cry so I gave it a consolation hug..

Foul…malodorous hug. I regret doing so.

Surprisingly at AX, I got laid twice and I got drunk three times. Who woulda’ thought that anime cons were made of win, booze, and sex? I sure didn’t.

Omg, this article was fucking brilliant! I’ve been to many conventions in the past, and plan to in the future. Why do I go? To have fun! Yes, there are ALOT of smelly fan boys/girls. Yes, personal space may be invaded. (tell them to fuck off!) Yes, 95% approx. are insane! The other 5% you can find pretty easily ( they stick out like a sore thumb amongst all the screaming lunatics) and have an intelligent conversation. Drinking is also alot of fun with aformentioned individuals.
Anime conventions aren’t for everyone. Proceed at your own risk.

Too bad that anyone worth talking to would never be caught alive at an anime convention

to bad no fucking web geek would ever fight at a con. it’s all talk and all of you who think you are “tough shit” wouldn’t really do anything either so just shut the fuck up and go play with your furry lovin self.

Haha, I love anime conventions. I been to otakon twice and anime usa 3 times. I missed last years otakon due to my funds, but this year I’m running late on registration. I’m a sucker for the panels, dealers room, game rooms, and masqurades. Some people do it just to meet others, others while do it purely based on fandom of anime. As a girl nerd, sometimes people just except you to be a mindless yaoi fangirl or a fat cosplay slut. Nah there are girls who video edit, and love amvs. Stereotypes, don’t hate them exactly but I would love to fuck them with a cinder block.

lol, I’ve only been to 2 anime conventions in my lifetime and felt awkward both times. Maybe it’s just that the conventions vary in different parts of the world. BY the way, are the boards down or what? I can’t get in and it keeps telling me that the page could not be found.

Quite an amusing article, very subjective, but good enough to waste a bit of time with.

Just realise: these animegeeks are (generally all) comfortable with the way they behave. So people who react like: ‘wtf is up with that’ and ‘that is so retarted’… should perhaps stray from these gateways to Hell known as Anime Conventions?

Heh, I’m getting ready for NDK 2006 in Denver next month. I’ve enjoyed this con, but two years ago, I discovered a fun way to enjoy it more, aka, being a sarcastic jerk to random nerds and writing about my dread experiences on my blog. Great article.

AWA was very much like the horror stories being told here.
Still, I’d only had a few people ask me if I wanted a hug/glomp (to which I very much said NO) and even then…they were *asking*.

So, even though you’ll see a lot of idiots, fat people who don’t know how to wear loose clothing, people who don’t bathe, and glompers, you can mostly avoid them if you try.
